Do You And Your Partner Want To Press Reset On Your Relationship?

couple looking frustrated with each other
  • Are you and your partner mourning the connection you once had and looking to get it back?

  • Has your relationship fallen into a negative cycle that you’re not sure how to climb out of?

  • Do you want to double down and get some deeper work done so that you can both move forward?

Maybe your communication has deteriorated to the point where every attempt to resolve your issues just ends in misunderstanding. Perhaps infidelity or another breach of trust has shaken your connection, and you’re wondering if your relationship has what it takes to recover.

On the other hand, maybe your relationship is in a pretty good place right now, but you’re looking to nip some issues in the bud before they turn into bigger problems. You and your partner want to maintain and safeguard your love, and you’re hoping that intensive couples therapy can help you do that.

You May Have Already Tried Weekly Therapy—But It Wasn’t Enough

Although weekly therapy can be helpful for many couples, it isn’t right for everyone. Sometimes progress is slow and it’s hard to see the gains from one week to another. Additionally, maybe you and your partner just don’t have the time to commit to meeting every week long-term.

Deep down, you probably want to designate some time to work on your relationship uninterrupted. There may be a sense of urgency to the work you need done, especially if there’s been a significant breach of trust and your relationship feels like it’s on shaky ground.

If this is the case, you’ve come to the right place. As the founder of Still Committed, I specialize in helping couples work through their challenges in an uninterrupted and accelerated format. Through my intensive therapy program, you and your partner can learn to overcome defensive behaviors and turn your marriage or relationship into a safe haven of love and understanding.

Questions About Intensive Couples Therapy?

Intensive Therapy Can Help Couples Get Back To The Business Of Loving Each Other

Over time, you and your significant other may have simply lost your connection and grown apart. Intensive couples therapy is a chance to reconnect with each other intimately. It’s an opportunity to laser-focus on the issues causing you heartache and stealing your peace, joy, and safety. Best of all, an intensive allows you to accomplish what can normally be achieved in months of therapy in a matter of days.

My intensive program can accommodate couples at any stage of a relationship’s journey—married, unmarried, or engaged. If you and your partner feel like you’re on the fence about your relationship or marriage but you don’t want to make any premature decisions, an intensive retreat can help you gain clarity on the best path forward. Or if you want to hone your strengths and work through any potential pitfalls before you tie the knot, my intensive therapy program can assist you in preparing for the next chapter of your life.

A Breakdown Of The Intensive Couples Counseling Process

The entire process will be personalized to suit you and your partner’s needs and goals. Although the intensive can be one or two days depending on your needs and your schedule, it generally lasts for three days. Each day, the intensive will run from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with a 60-minute lunch break and two 15-minute breaks, as needed, to rest and recharge.

Below is a breakdown of what you might expect during each day of the intensive process:

  • Day 1:  First, I will have you both separately complete a Relationship Assessment noting areas of strength and areas that still need growth. This will provide insight on what’s working and what’s not working in your relationship. Then you and your partner will come for a joint session where we will talk about what brought you to therapy and discuss your relationship’s history.

After that, I will hold individual sessions with each of you privately so that I can get to know you better and understand your individual struggles. When the individual sessions are done, I will meet with you both to merge the information I’ve gathered and outline a structure for the intensive.

  • Day 2: Inspired by the Gottman Method and EFT approaches, the second day will focus on exploring the negative beliefs and behaviors sustaining unhealthy communication patterns in your relationship. We’ll address different conflict management styles, build “love maps,” and look for ways to increase friendship, admiration, transparency, vulnerability, and closeness. The goal is to equip you both with the tools to deepen your relationship and de-escalate conflict.

  • Day 3: The final day of the intensive retreat will involve building on the momentum from the previous days. Working together, we’ll identify the underlying vulnerabilities and attachment needs. We’ll also continue to build friendship by developing rituals of connection and creating a sense of shared meaning in your marriage. Additionally, we’ll explore long-term goals for your relationship and devise a plan for maintaining the progress made during the intensive.

Throughout the intensive therapy process, I will draw from a range of time-honored and evidence-based strategies for assisting couples, including Mindfulness, The Gottman Method, and Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT). When the retreat is done, I may encourage you to pursue standard couples therapy to build on the progress made during your intensives, although many couples get all the help they need through intensives.

You May Have Some Questions About Intensive Couples Therapy…

How do we know if an intensive couples retreat is right for us?

If you tried weekly therapy before but you felt like the gains happened too slowly, then your relationship may be better suited for an intensive. Additionally, if you have a hectic schedule and making time for therapy each week would be difficult, intensive couples counseling can help you get to the heart of the matter without having to carve so much time out of your schedule.

Although many of the couples I see are on the brink of divorce or deciding whether or not to stay together, the truth is that intensives can greatly benefit any couple—even those who feel stable in their connection and aren’t having major problems.

What if an intensive couples retreat is too expensive?

Ultimately, an intensive is cheaper than the emotional and financial cost of divorce, separation, or a breakup, and it’s also cheaper than having to continue seeking help years down the road. You and your significant other are essentially paying for convenience and quicker results, and you’re also potentially saving yourselves years of trouble. So the more important question is: can you afford not to pursue intensive couples counseling? Are you willing to invest a few days’ worth of therapy to ensure your relationship is strong for years to come?

How much can we really accomplish in a few days?

Answer: a lot! The structure of an intensive allows you to accomplish the equivalent of three-to-five months of work with minimal distractions. You will also be able to practice new strategies in real time under the supervision of a licensed clinician. These strategies can ultimately help you foster a relationship with closer physical and emotional intimacy, decreased defensiveness, and more open and effective communication.
